To Commission a painting, please see below answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I commission a painting?

I will need your email, address, telephone number and the exact information on what you want me to paint.  If I cannot see the pet or object, then I would also need some very clear photos and information about the pet or object so I can understand their characteristics and temperement.

What type of commissions do you do?

I mainly get asked for pet portraits, but I have had a few landscapes that my customers have sent me to paint.  They normally send me clear photographs of the special scene or beloved pet via email or Whats App and we will communicate with each other until the perfect composition is agreed.  We then discuss the size of the painting and whether it is to be on paper, mount board or canvas and then I can give a price.

What type of paint do you use in your paintings?

I use acrylic paint primarily, but can also add texture with paste or tissue if needed, eg the foreground of seascapes.  I also occasionally use metallic paint if it needs to glow in some areas.  To make my paint run smoother without loosing its viscosity, I use acrylic medium, and if I need tthe paint to remain wet longer, I will use an acrylic retarder.  When the painting is complete, I spray a fine coat of quality matt varnish over it to protect the finished product.

What product do you use to paint on?

I paint on mount board, which can be cut to any size.  Mountboard will need a frame which can be sourced at an additional cost to the painting.

I also paint on quality canvas.  I will prepare it with several layers of gesso, gently sand each layer until it has a smoother finish.  When the painting is complete, I will prepare it with hooks and wire on the back, so that it is ready to hang.

How will I know if the composition is how I want it?

From the photos you have given me, and from our discussions, I will make a sketch of the draft painting and send you a copy for approval.

What timescales do you need to do the painting?

I usually need about 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the size and complexity, and whether I am already working on another painting at the time of your order.  It is best to give me at least a month to do the painting for you.  I will keep you updated on my progress during the painting process.

What do you charge for a painting

To own a "Sue's Fineart" commissioned painting - prices start from £200.00 for an A4 painting on mount board.  On canvas, they could be about £230.00 for an A4 painting.

An A3 size painting could cost about £250.00 - £300.00.

Prices do not include framing, or postage and packaging.

Do you need a deposit?

I will usually need a 20% deposit at the start of the order, but will only ask for the final payment once I have completed the painting and you are happy with it.

What methods do you use for payment?

I use PayPal, bank transfer, or cash payments.

Is postage and packaging included in the price?

No.  I will use the Royal Mail service and request for your painting to be signed for.  The price will depend on the weight, location and whether you want it sent by first class or second class delivery.  I will give you a rough estimate at the start of your order if you want it posted.  Of course, you could collect it from my house in Purbrook, Hampshire if you live closeby, or I could deliver it to you if you are within 6 miles of my location.

Do you frame the paintings?

Framing is extra.  I can source a frame for you and will let you know the cost early on in the process.  Paintings on mountboard will need a frame, but those painted on canvas can have the painting wrapped around the canvas, if you prefer it not to have a frame.  Some frames could be mounted as seen in my Gallery, or you could have a floating frame, which is more expensive, but effective.
